The Washington, D.C Area Geriatric Education
Center Consortium (WAGECC) is a collaboration
of institutions concerned with improving the health
of older persons living in the greater Washington,
D.C. regional area. The WAGECC service area includes
Washington D.C., the State of Maryland, and Northern
Virginia and embraces both urban and rural settings
where more than one million older adults reside.
Our Mission
The mission of WAGECC is to provide high quality
educational programs that enhance the knowledge
and skills of current and future health educators
and professionals, caregivers, clergy and others
in public service occupations. Through surveys,
evaluations, and focus groups, WAGECC identifies
the educational needs of its constituents and
develops educational programs and clinical learning
opportunities to meet these needs. By improving
the quality of service delivery, education, and
awareness, WAGECC positively impacts the health
and well-being of older persons, especially those
who are underserved.
Ethnographic Focus
In order to further educate practitioners and
others in the health and social needs of minority
elders, WAGECC encourages active minority participation
and expertise on its Board of Directors, Community
Advisory Board, Collaborative Community Aging
Network, and Interdisciplinary Education Steering
Committee. WAGECC supports multiethnic diversity
throughout its organization in other ways, by:
- Including strong minority content in all curricula.
- Recruiting minority faculty members, who also
actively participate in WAGECC programs.
- Providing technical assistance through in-service
training for community service programs and
institutions that predominantly serve minority
groups.
